100 Days of Black and White Photos: Day 30

This is an old photo. I took this last Spring when I first visited Seattle. This photo was taken in the Japanese Garden. I finally uploaded the color version to flickr (embedded below) so I wanted to see what it would look like as a black and white photo.

100 Days of Black and White Photos: Day 29

I took this shot with my Nikon P7700. I haven't used this camera in a while, so I was relearning most of its features. I shot this in manual mode with manual focus. I didn't even know this camera could do manual focus. I changed the color mode to Monochrome with a light application of cyanotype and extra contrast.

100 Days of Black and White Photos: Day 23

This wasn't the photo I was going to upload today. A few weeks ago I bought a light tent. I tested it out with this little guy, took photos of him and then forgot about them. Today I decided to use my Lumix GF2 to take photos instead of my phone or iPod, and I found this photo on the card.

100 Days of Black and White Photos: Day 18

The 'S' in Seattle is for spiders. That is one the of the first things I noticed when I got here; spiders everywhere. There is even a spider that made a home outside my window. It is the size of a green pea. The one in this photo is probably the size of a U.S. quarter.

100 Days of Black and White Photos: Day 15

Ice age. I put a plastic dinosaur in a plastic container of water and then set it in the freezer to freeze last night. As always, the scene looked better in my head, put this photo came out okay, I guess. When I was done, I just used the ice for a bruise I have on my left thigh. Reuse and recycle!

100 Days of Black and White Photos: Day 14

This is the other hill I have to walk up and down almost everyday. I don't know if you can tell in this photo, but there are no sidewalks. When I first moved here, I felt like I was living in the country because a lot of the streets do not have sidewalks (along with other reasons).

100 Days of Black and White Photos: Day 11

So tired lately for some reason, but I forced myself to go for a walk after work. I managed to get to the top of this park to take this photo. I see  I see I have more lens flare. I think I might be channeling J. J. Abrams when I take these landscape photos.

100 Days of Black and White Photos: Day 10

The CEO of the company that I work for was in town today. That meant meetings and surprisingly dinner. I knew I wouldn't have had much time to take photos, so I took this photo in the morning when I was waiting for the bus to go to work.

100 Days of Black and White Photos: Day 9

When I moved out here last year, my brother sent me a FireTV as a house warming gift. I didn't have a TV, so I couldn't use it. A few weeks ago, I finally bought a monitor that has a HDMI port. I hooked my old mac mini and the FireTV to the monitor. It is such a great device. I recently found the youtube app on the FireTV and now I heart it so much more. Thanks again Bro!

100 Days of Black and White Photos: Day 7

Today was a crazy day at work. By the end of the day,  I was too frazzled to think about getting a good shot. I took this shot while waiting for my bus to go home. I heart this macro lens. I want to take photos of everything with it. I'm not really pleased with the photo, but it will do.

100 Days of Black and White Photos: Day 5

I forgot that I had an Easy Macro macro lens. I bought it from Photojojo the same time that I bought the polarizer lens, (a different) macro lens, and a telephoto lens for mobile phones.

100 Days of Black and White Photos: Day 4

Shot from a window at work. I remembered this morning that I has a polarizer lens for mobile phones and used it for this shot. I also have a telephoto, macro and fisheye lens, so those might be used in photos in the coming weeks.

100 Days of Black and White Photos: Day 3

A view of the sunset from my window. I have to say before moving out here, I don't think I saw the sky much. To clarify, in NYC, the roads are narrow (with the exception of main roads and highways) and the building are tall. If you are in Manhattan you probably get to see 10% of the sky when looking up. The rest is all buildings and scaffolding. NYC is also fairly flat so you get to see a lot of vanishing points. Out here, the city is very hilly. If there was a word that meant bigger than a hill but not a mountain, I would use it here, because these don't feel like hills.

100 Days of Black and White Photos: Day 2

This is Danboard. I've wanted one of these for close to 7 years and I finally bought one. It was shipped from China, so it took close to 2 weeks to get to me. She will probably be a model in most of my shots.

100 Days of Black and White Photos: Day 1

I know my day one photo is more on the sucky side. I decided this morning to do the challenge and didn't give myself much time to think about my subject matter. I have a feeling this will be a common thing before I get used to seeing things that will make great black and white photos.

100 Days Challenge: Black & White Photos

One hundred days is about three months and a two weeks. That is how long I am going to try to upload a black & white photo everyday. I decided to try the 100 days challenge. I'm not good with these challenges. For years I've tried the 365 days, 52 weeks and 30 days challenges. I failed them all, until this year. Earlier this year, I tried a 30 days book challenge. I fell behind a couple of times and had to catch up, but it was the first time I finished one.  So now it is time to level up.

I choose to upload a black and white photo for 100 days because I want to learn more about light. When shooting in black and white, you tend to care more about the composition than colors and filter effects. I want to learn how the red, blue and green channels effects the contrast of the photos. There is so much to learn and I'm going to try to pack it all into 100 days.

My photos will probably start off looking like shit and hopefully they will get better toward the end, but I'm focusing more on learning about light, than posting amazing photos.
